RE: {Chrysler 300} Axle bearing shims needed for 300F

The endplay is critically important on these rearends.  Go buy a cheap dial indicator and a rubber mallet.

The endplay on the 1940’s and early 1950’s version of this same rearend had a lot closer endplay tolerance.

I read a MOPAR service bulletin from the mid-1950’s that advised that the older clearance be increased as they were getting cars coming in with differential issues due to the “growing” of the axle shafts due to the increased heat of the cars running at sustained higher speeds on the “new” Interstate highways.

You can kill a perfectly good differential if the endplay is not within the specifications.  Do not guess and do not assume that the old shim pack is correct. Bearing wear and the clearance can open up.

Hi John,

I know what you mean, the ridges look like a “crush” region.  When I did the rear bearings on the 64 Newport and 64 K, what was on the axle flange were a few of this type of “shim” making up a shim pack, along with foam gaskets (pictured below).  I used these shims to set end play, and replaced the foam gaskets.  Two data points only, I don’t know how correct they are, but basically matched what was there…
I also learned it’s a good idea to “feel” the end play before you start (I don’t have runout gauges), and also note the original position of the races WRT the plane of the axle flange (how far the races protrude).  (For anyone trying it for the first time, like I was doing).

Just a quick note for anyone doing a future archive search on this subject.
>> Randy’s 300F rear axle flanges have equidistant studs about 3-1/2” across center to center.
>> The Napa shim 55032, which Napa computers claim would work for 1961-89, have differing spaced studs and look like this:
