fyi.. looks like  a gasket with those ridges (not a  shim !) ? 
look  at factory book ? is there  shim and  gasket ? 
may be wrong  but from foggy memory there is no gasket  with shims, they make the gasket , have to as they seal to each other in a pile? 
shims go with timken tapered axle bearing ( great stuff!) but they changed to ball bearing at some point on 8 3/4 ; gasket needed. 
( and seal ?)
