Re: {Chrysler 300} Generator vs Alternator on 300 F

Mike, the initial Chrysler alternator for 1960 was what is called a wide fin, just means the spacing of the fins around the body are wider. Later versions which were manufactured by Chrysler directly rather than a subcontractor had narrower fins probably to keep bits and pieces and fingers out.

A wide fin round back alternator, they were all round back until the late sixties, with the forward look emblem on it and stamped 1960 would be perfect. However a round back alternator which is run of the mill at RockAuto and most parts stores is available for not a lot of money.

I would not get hung up on the specificity of a Chrysler alternator. Any of them will look the part under the hood. No one will know the difference between a wide fin and an alternator built in 1967.

Thank you all.
I am determined to keep this vehicle as original as possible which to me means Original.
What is a round finback alternator, Danny? Would that be more appropriate than a dealer installed alternator? More Kosher? Preferable to just having my mechanic put an alternator on in place of the existing generator?
You mentioned a ‘63?
The other car in my ultra small collection is a 1963 aqua Pace Car convertible. I believe I have a picture of the engine which might include the alternator. I’ll look for it.

And Tony, thank you. Before I make a move I’ll check out your suggestion. about the alternative. I told my guy to wait until tomorrow.
Jamie suggested I talk to John and I left a message for him at Mecum. Thanks.
Yours in the continuing struggle to keep these 300s going and going and going!

 Hi Danny,

You have an excellent point that alternators were used on Gran Turismo Fs.

Using an alternator that looks like a generator is a stealth solution. Check out the “Gener-ator” site below:

I respect John Grady and his nod to the sanctity of rare 300 cars. I agree with him.

However the AMA Specifications of 1960 for the 300 F call for generator OR alternator. The 4 speed specials came with alternators or so I hear. I've seen the AMA sheets. A round-back should be considered correct. You could have had the dealer put it on. It is eminently superior to a generator in every conceivable way. I have one on my F. John Lazenby installed it when he had the car. I've since swapped that out for a Forward Look logo round back from 1963.  Eventually I'll find a 1960 wide fin round back and I'll be completely kosher.

I would otherwise live with a generator on any old car and I do because it belongs there. In the case of the F an alternator could have been there. Generators are rude, crude machines, rotating coils have to conduct full output via a spinning switch and carbon brushes. Alternators make all the juice in the stationary coils, brushes only there to conduct smallish current through slip rings to the rotating field coil. So much better. Less weight, more power at lower RPM, difference between a candle and an incandescent light bulb.

And with AC that you are going to use? Alternator is the way to go. GM went to its first alternator usage on 1962 Chevy & Pontiac with AC, across the board the following year. Delco knew something.
