Re: {Chrysler 300} Generator vs Alternator on 300 F

Hi all,

About 30 years ago this car was brought to a Chrysler 300 Inc. show in Bend, Oregon on a trailer where it stayed for the entire show because of a tranny that had gone belly up.  I could have had the car for $12,000 as is!!  I did not realize what this car really was.  I have been kicking myself in the posterior ever since.  But I am happy that Wayne enjoyed it for many years.

The Pacific Palisades fire is just across the Santa Monica Mtns., about 20 miles away!!!!  Once in a while I could see the flames leap over the mtns. but fortunately the winds were blowing toward the ocean.

Rick,

Yes it is! Was also owned by Wayne Graefen for several years. Interesting that Andy logged nearly 120,000 miles on it from new before selling it. Non-synchro 1st gear.

Yes. No mount provisions and only one head is drilled. I'll have to look at the casting number when I get home on Sunday.

So the Imperial used the 61 style exhaust manifold?

I have a late production 1960 Imperial with the alternator. It does not mount to the exhaust manifold. The setup is the same as for 1961 cars with the head drilled for a cast iron pivot bracket. My imperial has A/C. The alternator would hit the 1960 generator exhaust manifold. Of course the Imperial exhaust manifold does not have the heat riser port.

I have seen mounts people have made to adapt alternators to the exhaust mount.

The only 300F's that had a factory alternator were the 4 speed cars. They also had special headers without the alternator mount. Some 1960 Imperials had the alternator. There was a special bracket that bolted to the manifold to mount the alternator to. Any F with an alternator was a dealer install in my opinion.
Keep em stock Don

FYI - There’s also a different mounting bracket for non-a/c single pulley vs a/c dual pulley generators, as the a/c generators mount a bit farther back for proper belt alignment.

The installation of the alternator, do you saw off the mount from the exhaust manifold? The GT models had a different exhaust manifold system.

Hi Danny,

You have an excellent point that alternators were used on Gran Turismo Fs.

Using an alternator that looks like a generator is a stealth solution. Check out the “Gener-ator” site below:

However the AMA Specifications of 1960 for the 300 F call for generator OR alternator. The 4 speed specials came with alternators or so I hear. I've seen the AMA sheets. A round-back should be considered correct. You could have had the dealer put it on. It is eminently superior to a generator in every conceivable way. I have one on my F. John Lazenby installed it when he had the car. I've since swapped that out for a Forward Look logo round back from 1963.  Eventually I'll find a 1960 wide fin round back and I'll be completely kosher.

I would otherwise live with a generator on any old car and I do because it belongs there. In the case of the F an alternator could have been there. Generators are rude, crude machines, rotating coils have to conduct full output via a spinning switch and carbon brushes. Alternators make all the juice in the stationary coils, brushes only there to conduct smallish current through slip rings to the rotating field coil. So much better. Less weight, more power at lower RPM, difference between a candle and an incandescent light bulb.

And with AC that you are going to use? Alternator is the way to go. GM went to its first alternator usage on 1962 Chevy & Pontiac with AC, across the board the following year. Delco knew something.
