Does he have the ballast resistor in there?

Hello Everyone:
A friend of mine posed this question

ignition coils

has anybody had any problems with coils on a 59 413 big block. this will be
the third one that i have replaced in a short time. the coil will get real
hot, you cant even touch it. I moved it off the intake manifold and put it
on the inner fender well to see if that would help, and it looks like it
didnt help. If anyone has any info please help

I gave the following response. Any other ideas?

Hey Larry, Maybe the ballast resistor value is too low. This in turn would
cause excessive current to go to the coil thus causing overheating and
boiling of the dielecrtic oil inside. Basically short-living the coil. Put
your question up on the main list. (the address that starts with
L-forward.... I don't think the manifold was the problem. The coil
survived that many years on the intake. Alot of the commandos and
firepower engines had them mounted even closer to the exhaust manifolds
and they held up 'til now. Good Luck

Thanks guys for your input.

                                                            Frank
