I was around when the performance era arrived, and until 1955, there was no particular model deemed to be a pure performance car. Some cars were perceived or known to have better performance, but they were simply transportaion that happened to be fast, not a special class of vehicles. They were advertised to climb hills effortlessly and to be able to pass another car quickly and safely. In 1955, Chrysler introduced their special performance model C-300 and followed up in 1956 with performance models all across product lines. Soon after that, manufacturers began marketing acceleration and top speed for for the enthusiast. The term "muscle car" can be argued to death, but 1955 was the year sport performance in family-sized cars began.
