Roger, This is a vent for allowing the tank, internally, to assume atmospheric pressure, as well as vent off pressure from heat and such. A vent's a vent. Now, if it is clogged( bugs nest or rust or smashed) and it cannot allow air to pass, then the tank would likely collapse, but trust me, it is there to VENT the tank. Not sure how it would stop a fuel splashing incident. Mike
