I just went through this on a 1959 Dodge. What they don't tell you in the shop manual is that you have to remove the steering wheel and all of the turn signal mechanism inside the steering column housing before the steering shaft will slide out of the housing. Once all of this "upper" steering column stuff is removed, the steering shaft will pull out, and allow you to get at the roll-pin that holds the shaft to the steering gear input shaft. Punching the pin out can be a little difficult, as well. Good luck!!
