I used the spacer for a little better preformace, no other reason, the butterflys will hit the top of the WCFB intake unless you hog out the outside edges of the intake holes, or rebore them, this is what was done to my intake (hogged out), if you use the spacer no clearance problems, but there will be a little disruption of air flow because of the bore differance. This intake use to have a early 60s Carter AFB on it before the Eldenbrock, the Carter also had the holes for both intake patterns, don't know if they still do on the new ones.
