The Neutral safety switch simply provides a ground to one of the terminals of the voltage regulator. Without that ground the starter will not engage and you cannot start the car. You can check to see if the switch is bad by either measuring resistance from the Votage Regulator terminal to ground or by grounding the terminal directly and seeing if the vehicle will start. The back-up light switch is mounted on the pushbutton shifter on the automatics.
