It's not just for 'lateral clearance' that you should use the later mainfolds. The later manifolds don't have the internal dividers that choke the engine above 4500 rpm! You could solve this on the pre-63 manifolds by cutting the manifold in half (top/bottom),cutting out the division in the middle and welding it all back together BUT that's a lot of work!
