I checked the book again. Those are the manufacturer's suggested retail prices for the engines, BUT the Torqueflite transmission (order code 283,MSRP $210.70) is listed as "required with SonoRamic Commando engines).
So for a 383 SonoRamic with the required Torqueflite you'd have a combined MSRP of $496.40. A combined dealer charge of $389 would have been a fair deal,given that combined MSRP. (Never mind that in late 1959 $389 would have bought you a whole good used car,with room to spare...)
