My '57 Savoy 2 dr sedan is equipped with manual steering. I plan to install a new 360 ci crate engine (currently has no engine) and a new automatic transmission. The brakes will be upgraded to discs, A/C will be added, and larger, wider tires will be used. I wonder if the manual steering will still be workable? The new engine and brakes should help the car shed some pounds, but the AC will add weight up front and the beefier tires will provide more resistance. Will I need Conan the Barbarian upper-body strength to steer the car at low speeds? I guess I'm just trying to get a perspective on how much of a chore manual steering is..especially for a car I plan to drive almost every day. Does it have superior "road feel" to similar-period power steering setups? If I do keep it, are there any quick tests to tell whether the steering box or any parts of the system needs help? (keep in mind the car has no engine or brakes at this point).
If the decision is made to go to power steering, what would be the best way to do it? Since the original motor is gone, I'm not concerned with originality, except where external appearance is concerned. I do like ease of installation, reliability, and preferably a firmer feel like the more modern cars. Any ideas? Thanks for reading. I'm kind of fumbling around with this and trying to learn as much as I can.
Thanks!
Justin
P.S. I'd really appreciate any feedback to the "Suregrip Advantages?" message posted a few days back..Thanks..
