Re: {Chrysler 300} Generator vs Alternator on 300 F

Here's Joe Jordan's P-a-M 4-Spd 'Short Branch' F coupe - the only one produced with Factory a/c - a couple photos attached.

You'll recall that our late legendary Chrysler engineer, Burt Bouwkamp, referred to these manifolds as 'Short Branch' and 'Long Branch.'

I respect John Grady and his nod to the sanctity of rare 300 cars. I agree with him.

However the AMA Specifications of 1960 for the 300 F call for generator OR alternator. The 4 speed specials came with alternators or so I hear. I've seen the AMA sheets. A round-back should be considered correct. You could have had the dealer put it on. It is eminently superior to a generator in every conceivable way. I have one on my F. John Lazenby installed it when he had the car. I've since swapped that out for a Forward Look logo round back from 1963.  Eventually I'll find a 1960 wide fin round back and I'll be completely kosher.

I would otherwise live with a generator on any old car and I do because it belongs there. In the case of the F an alternator could have been there. Generators are rude, crude machines, rotating coils have to conduct full output via a spinning switch and carbon brushes. Alternators make all the juice in the stationary coils, brushes only there to conduct smallish current through slip rings to the rotating field coil. So much better. Less weight, more power at lower RPM, difference between a candle and an incandescent light bulb.

And with AC that you are going to use? Alternator is the way to go. GM went to its first alternator usage on 1962 Chevy & Pontiac with AC, across the board the following year. Delco knew something.
