James,
I have the 6”x 9” Retro Sound in my ’65 Barracuda dash built up on a stand for assembly, not yet in car. You may remember seeing it when you were in my shop. The radio has the Aurora conversion in it, and I’ve played it many hours over the last 1-1/2 years while working on the project, with no problems. This dash is very tight, and will not accommodate a 6” x 9” with a big magnet. I’m very familiar with installing two 4” speakers in a 6 x 9 panel and it is a good approach, my 300G currently has that arrangement.
Having said that, I like the idea of a dual voice coil woofer with separate L/R tweeters. It provides more bass than two 4” speakers, because the woofer is larger . I was very happy to find a dual voice coil 6 x 9 that fit. I’ve been an audio buff since my early 20’s, and recognize that debating speakers is a bit like politics, there are a lot of opinions. You may want to try a couple different setups and see what works best for you; in terms of fit, and sound quality. I buy a lot from Amazon, and I’m not shy about retuning things that don’t satisfy my needs.

John,
Can you elaborate on the failure of the Retrosound Speakers?
Has anyone else had any issues with them?
James

Ryan, I don't want to muddy the waters either about the L vs. the K so this is good. .
The front speaker I took out of my L is a 6x9 as is the rear. While both were replacement Radio Shack 6x9, if you look up under the dash, the opening is is for a 6x9. FWIW, the front speaker in my '65 Barracuda is also a 6x9 and I took the original speaker out of that one. The mounting brackets are the same as the picture.
With my '70 300 convertible, the front speaker is a 4x10.and the rear is a 6x9. I use a plate I made for two 3" speakers for the front and a Customsound 6x9 in the rear with the Aurora conversion.
It was suggested to use a lower profile Retrosound speaker, but my experience with two dismal failures of Retrosound speakers within a year of installing them just doesn't ,make me want to give them any more money. Yes, those speakers were correct ohm rating and were not overpowered.
This is what I made for my 300L front. 4" Alpine speakers. I haven't wandered out to the cold garage to bolt it into the car yet, but it should be OK.

John, I don’t want to muddy the waters too much about 1965’s on a 300K thread, my original response was to suggest making a mount to attach two small right and left speakers in the single speaker position.
To be clear though, the front speaker opening on my 1965 300 and several others I’ve seen is 4 X 10. I think they had an adapter bracket that allowed for the use of a 6 x 9. It’s been more than 20 years since I had my eyes on the installed speaker panel but I still have the original 4 x 10 in a box here. My car had the two speaker system with reverb. Attached is a picture of a 6 X 9 with the adapters taken from a c-body forum.

The front speaker for the 300L is 6x9. I'm just finishing up a plate to mount two 4" Alpine speakers.

For my front speaker on my ’65 I made a mounting panel the same dimension as the original speaker, which I recall was 4” x 10”. I cut two speaker holes in the plate and mounted small Rockford Fosgate speakers to it. It sounds great and avoided the cost of custom speakers. Rear are 6” x 9” and bolt up directly under the package tray.

I've used those dual voice coil speakers with Aurora conversions and they sound great. The one thing you need to keep in mind is they have a huge magnet. My 300L radio is at Gary Tayman's right now as a matter of fact.
I'm going to use the 6x9 in the rear of the 300L (it's all mounted) but I just found out the hard way it doesn't fit the front. The magnet is huge and it hits the dash frame and glove box. Just be sure there's enough room on your 300K... I'll bet there is.

Hi All,
I am working on the sound system for the 300K. I am going to get the Aurora conversion for my AM radio.
The front speaker hole is large enough to house the below I think:

My question is on the rear. Does anyone have any photos of the rear speaker in the housing sitting on the rear seatback and any photos to show if there is a hole in the carboard separator so the speaker can sit into the trunk area? Or, did the factory speaker fit projecting forward into the 300 housing between the seats? There is only 1.5 inch in there between the framework and the black mounting plate.
I am hoping that the following may fit into the rear:

Thanks, James
