RE: Re[2]: {Chrysler 300} RE: Speakers 300K

I guess that is why I thought it was in the grill. Having had two prior hardtops and two prior convertibles decades ago, I must have had one with the speaker in the grill and it stuck in my head.

Thanks, James

James, that is correct, but not until the 1963 model year.  1963 was the first year that Chrysler offered a rear speaker option for the convertible, as that was the first year for a speaker "grille" setup in the center rear seatback.  Of course , there was no 300J convertible, and so the first letter car convertible to offer a rear speaker option was the 300K.  This is discussed in our page on the 7-button Bendix radios here:

And yes, for the convertible the speaker was probably something other than a 6x9, but we need someone with a K 'vert to validate.

GM had been using that mid-seatback location for their convertibles earlier than Chrysler.  My '62 Electra 225 convertible had a rear sepaker behind the center rear seatback.  Sounded great with the top down, but very tinny with the top up as there was essentially no speaker baffle with the top raised.

Carl,

That would make my life easier. I really did think it was in the seat center, but since it has been almost 3 decades since the last 300K, I am sure my memory is not what it was.

Did they place a speaker in the seat center on the convertible?

James, with all due respect, the 1963-64 coupe rear speaker is a 6x9 and it is housed under the rear package shelf on the driver's side (above the spare tire). not behind the rear seat back (GM cars used that location sometimes, not Chrysler).

For validation, we access the club trunk reference page on the website which has photos of original, unrestored trunk compartments.  For the K, we used the late John Holst's unmolested original K coupe, bought new by his father:   300K Coupe Trunk where we find this image:

And here is 1963:

On the rear the speaker is not a 6x9 it is smaller.  Also, it fits between the seat. The so-called speaker grills on the package shelf on the passenger side have the factory defroster in it.

I am looking at dual voice coil speakers so I can use them in the factory locations.  The front does not look like it will be a lot of trouble.  The rear however is tight and that is why I was asking if anyone has any photos of the rear unit with a speaker in it and or has a photos if there is a hole in the cardboard separator for it to stick into the trunk on the factory installed rear speaker.

1965 and 1962 are not the same as 1963 and 1964.

Hi All,

I am working on the sound system for the 300K. I am going to get the Aurora conversion for my AM radio.

The front speaker hole is large enough to house the below I think:

My question is on the rear.  Does anyone have any photos of the rear speaker in the housing sitting on the rear seatback and any photos to show if there is a hole in the carboard separator so the speaker can sit into the trunk area?  Or, did the factory speaker fit projecting forward into the 300 housing between the seats?  There is only 1.5 inch in there between the framework and the black mounting plate.

I am hoping that the following may fit into the rear:

Thanks, James
