I guess that is why I thought it was in the grill. Having had two prior hardtops and two prior convertibles decades ago, I must have had one with the speaker in the grill and it
stuck in my head. Thanks, James From: Carl
Bilter <cbilter@xxxxxxxxx> James, that is correct, but not until the 1963 model year. 1963 was the first year that Chrysler offered a rear speaker option for the convertible,
as that was the first year for a speaker "grille" setup in the center rear seatback. Of course , there was no 300J convertible, and so the first letter car convertible to offer a rear speaker option was the 300K. This is discussed in our page on the 7-button
Bendix radios here: And yes, for the convertible the speaker was probably something other than a 6x9, but we need someone with a K 'vert to validate. GM had been using that mid-seatback location for their convertibles earlier than Chrysler. My '62 Electra 225 convertible had a rear sepaker
behind the center rear seatback. Sounded great with the top down, but very tinny with the top up as there was essentially no speaker baffle with the top raised.
